The 12 DIY’s Of Christmas – Gingerbread Trees

I’ve been seeing these darling gingerbread trees all over lately but most recently in Emily’s kitchen! She shared a photo of some she just got and I thought they were so cute. Obviously these ones are made out of wood, beautifully shaped and expertly painted but I got to thinking I could probably make something similar.

First I looked around at my scrap wood and considered making some little trees but I really didn’t have what I would have needed to work with and didn’t want to go out and buy a bunch of wood right now. I’m short on space in my garage as it is! So next I looked around for some I could buy already made and although I really liked some other trees better, the cost made it silly to buy them just to paint and change. In the end I got these raw wood, rustic trees for about $4 each.

I lightly sanded the face of the trees since it was a bit rough in places, then I took some stencils and got to work. I considered the possibility of lightly staining the trees first so they would be a darker base and the pattern would show up with more contrast but in the end I left them natural. I literally just used pieces of the stencils and fit the design in however I liked. I used a sort of paisley design on one and snowflakes on the other.

If you have the talent to paint freehand – be my guest. That is not one of my abilities which is why I went with a stencil.

I ended up putting them on top of my kitchen cabinets because I was still needing some winter decor up there.

They honestly couldn’t have been simpler!

Until next time,
