The 12 DIY’s Of Christmas – Candy Canes

I’ve had this idea in the back of my mind for a little while now but hadn’t gotten around to doing it yet. Recently I decided to change that.

I bought some of the large plastic candy canes at Dollar Tree. You can get them all sorts of places though. These particular ones are supposed to light up and only some of them actually did but I really didn’t care because I don’t intend to light them anyways.

I got some wide burlap ribbon and cut it in half lengthwise. I did this on purpose because the narrower ribbon and the wide ribbon were the same price but by cutting the wider ribbon in half, I could get twice as much for the same price. Seemed more cost effective to me.

I wrapped the burlap ribbon around the candy cane tacking it every so often with some hot glue. There are gaps in between but that’s okay – you just do another layer when you are done to cover the gaps.

Here is what it should look like when you are all finished covering it. If you look super closely you can see the stripes ever so slightly underneath the burlap ribbon. If this bothers you, you could always give the candy canes a quick spray of paint before putting the burlap on so that they are solid underneath. I didn’t mind this since it’s so minimal.

Next I wrapped narrow red ribbon around the candy canes for the stripes. Again, I tacked it every so often with hot glue.

Feel free to embellish them a little with greenery, ribbon, flowers, ornaments, bells etc.

And here is the finished product! I have always liked candy canes but don’t like them to look super bright and shiny and plastic. I think this gives them a lovely almost vintage feel to them.

They really don’t take that long to make and don’t cost more than a few dollars each if you get a good price on your ribbon.

Super easy to do even if you aren’t that crafty and you could use them in so many ways.

Until next time,
