Thrift Store Challenge: Joining The Crowd

Have you ever seen something on someone else’s Instagram feed or blog or in someone else’s home and just loved how it looked but when you had the opportunity to put it in your home you just passed it by each and every time?

Yup! That’s me and milk glass.

At the risk of having my house egged I will go ahead and admit that I don’t really care for a lot of the milk glass things I see except for the little vases…those I love when I see collections of them with wispy flowers or grasses in them, sometimes nothing in them, sometimes flags or some other random item stuck in them for seasonal decor.

I often see milk glass vases in my thrift stores when I am there looking for treasures but every time I pass them by. Why? I’m not really sure. When I see them sitting on the shelf in the thrift store, they really don’t appeal to me at all. Typically I am the sort of person who always sees beyond the here and now and sees the potential something has but I guess I have not been doing that with milk glass vases.

After perusing one of Emily’s (Le Cultivateur) recent blog posts showing her adorable mantel styled with some of her gorgeous milk glass vases (she has oh so many beautiful ones) in which she had placed flags for July 4th, I promised myself that the next time I saw some milk glass vases at the thrift store I would grab some.

I kept my promise too!

I found all 4 of these in one thrift store, all in one trip!

With an upcoming Thrift Store Challenge, what could be more perfect? I snatched them all up!

So you can see I spent a huge amount of money! A whole $6.96!

Now for what I am going to do with them for the moment in my home…..

This is the first surface that I have styled after unpacking some of the boxes and dragging out some of my favorite decor pieces like my vintage windows. It made perfect sense to put the vases here!

I’ve paired them with my oval frames, some vintage books, floral stems and of course vintage windows up on my mantel.

There’s really no end of ways I could style them and of course I will be adding to the collection now that I’ve gotten started!

I also managed to acquire a few new vintage books to add to my collection ranging from 1909 to 1936 for copyright dates. Aren’t they beauties?

The 4th milk glass vase I bought is across on the other side of the mantel paired with a pewter cup that I’m using as a vase as well.

I can’t believe I didn’t start collecting these beauties long ago!

Yes, I was happy to find some unusual shapes, especially the one, on my first foray into milk glass vases! My first of many, I suspect. It’s so good to be back! I’ve missed being able to participate in the challenges. This is the first time I’ve put both oval frames together in one place! haha

  2. The vases look very pretty up on your mantel Tara. I don’t have a Milk Glass collection either, but I think they look very pretty styled in my friend’s home. Thanks for hosting this wonderful challenge. Have a great Monday!

Thanks so much, Dori. Like I said in the post, I always like the vases when I see them in other people’s pictures but for some reason I always passed it by…..well NO MORE. Now I’m gonna be collecting yet another thing! haha

Tara, you know that I am completely loving what you did on your mantel!! Those milk glass vases are the perfect finishing touch for your beautifully styled mantel!! And the flowers that you used to fill the vases are so sweet, so simple, and so perfect!!

Thanks so much Emily! You are one of the main inspirations behind me starting to collect the milk glass vases because yours always look so amazing! Now I just need a whole bunch more! lol

  5. Oh Tara I just love this mantle and those vases has just brought it to life!! I’m not a lover or collector of milk glasses but looking at this , well I’m thinking I want to run to my nearest thrift store and start collecting some!! I love what you have done here … great styling my friend!

    1. stilettosandshiplap says:

Like I said in the post – I am not either but I do like the vases when I see a bunch of them in other people’s places which is why I finally caved and got some and now I’m wondering what took me so long! Someone on IG also told me about a lady who uses them in large groupings to hold candles and WOW! Is that ever stunning! Now I need a whole bunch of them for winter decor this year!

  6. I love the little milk glass vases! What a fun find and they look perfect on your mantel!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. stilettosandshiplap says:

Aren’t they adorable? I haven’t found any sort of “weeds” yet that don’t look good in them either! And candles! They make the best candlesticks! Who knew?
