The 12 DIY’s of Christmas – Winter Village Knockoff

I’m so excited to be sharing the first of 12 Christmas DIY’s that Emily and I are planning to share over the next little bit. After I came up with the inspiration that was going to be behind my winter/Christmas decor this year, I started pondering what I would do for DIY’s.

Sometimes you know way ahead of time something that you really want to do and sometimes you have to go looking for something.

Well as I got out my bins of decor I didn’t see much of anything I really wanted to change. Pretty much what I have right now is the way I want it to look so that meant I needed to find something new or at least new to me. Y’all know I love to save money but have a high end look……

Drumroll please!

Okay just kidding. This is sort of my inspiration behind my project. I believe this little village is from Target.

I honestly don’t know where this one is from since I just found it on Pinterest BUT it gives you the idea that was in my head. A little white ceramic Christmas village.

Maybe some gold.

Maybe some glitter.

I looked around to see if any Thrift Stores had some of the little ceramic houses and stores and things but never found anything that was worth getting.

Then I took a trip to Dollar Tree.

Don’t close this tab and walk away! I am never going to be someone who gets a whole lot of things from Dollar Tree because I prefer vintage and antiques and high quality looking pieces BUT sometimes you can get a bargain there and make it work.

How do you like my Christmas village?

Okay clearly I have some things I need to change but that’s what paint was created for!

Everything got a couple coats of white craft paint and immediately looked a whole lot better! But I wasn’t going to leave them like this. I had something a little bit more sparkly in mind…..

Once everything was dry I used a gold paint pen to outline most of the windows and doors on the buildings and a few signs. You could use gold craft paint (or black or whatever color suits your taste) and a tiny paintbrush but I found the paint pen worked well and was really fast. I had to touch up a couple spots with some white paint where I made a little “oops” but that was simple.

Using a small paintbrush I paint Mod Podge on the roofs of the buildings, avoiding some areas where it looked like clumps of snow. I sprinkled glitter on the glue liberally and left it do dry before I shook off the excess.

I cleaned up the excess glitter that was clinging to the buildings where I didn’t want it by blowing on them and brushing them with a clean, dry, fluffy paintbrush.

After I took this photo I did use a Sharpie marker to put some fun names on a couple of the signs….

These little houses already have lights in them so I didn’t need to add any either.

Of course the best part of any DIY is when it’s all done and you can style it in your home.

Pin it for later…

So glad you stopped by today….we will be sharing another Christmas DIY very soon!

Until next time,
