School’s Out For The Summer – For Some People!

Personally I feel like I’ve never finished school. I’ve gone back several times to get new careers but also there isn’t a day I’m not learning something new.

It’s called being a mother!

Anyways speaking of being a mother, my baby boy decided recently that he wanted a desk in his room like his sister has. He felt he should have a work space. A homework space and I think he’s just growing up! I’m happy for him but sad at the same time because this is my baby we’re talking about here.

So I searched and I searched for a desk for him. It had to be quite small because he doesn’t have much space in the room he shares with his 2 brothers. (They didn’t want anything to do with desks or homework) Finally I found one on Facebook Marketplace that looked like a good fit but I wasn’t able to go get it right away and I was sure it wouldn’t still be available when I could go get it.

But it was!

Baby boy and I went and picked it up together and he was so excited. A quick trip to the store and he had picked out new fabric for the chair seat and some paint for the desk.

I wasn’t shocked when he chose blue. That’s been his favorite color since he could talk!

I started by sanding down the entire desk because it had been painted several times and at least one coat of paint had not been done very well. So many rough spots and brush strokes. I discovered that before it was painted white, it had been painted a blush pink and before that it had been stained a deep pinkish mahogany color. Under all THAT was the original wood.

I got curious and grabbed my heat gun and set to work on the top. Once I uncovered the original wood with it’s very unique grain pattern I knew I had to leave it natural. I think it looks like bird tracks!

See how cute it is with the natural wood top?

I painted it with the chosen blue chalk paint. It’s a Waverly and the color is called “Ocean”.

I removed the seat to recover it and painted out the white back in the matching blue paint.

Overall the desk took 2 coats but a couple spots needed to be touched up with a 3rd. I used a spray poly for the main desk (3 coats in a matte finish) and I brushed on a thick coat of satin poly on the natural wood top to make sure it was sealed really well.

The new fabric on the seat goes so well with the desk and adds a splash of texture and pattern without being too bold thanks to it’s tone-on-tone effect with the desk. I chose to leave the chair in it’s sort of mahogany color stain to add some different color to the room.

I had to move one of his little wooden shelves to fit better around the desk and I grabbed a couple new globes from Hobby Lobby to style this area with. His little collectors cars fit perfectly into the little nooks in the top of the desk. One of his sisters styled the pin board I made in the lowest section of the desk. I simply attached cork board to the backing with double sided tape.

I can’t get over how this makes his room look so much more grown up. I guess I don’t have a truly little boy anymore but he will always be my baby!

Until next time, sweet friends…
