French Vintage Friday: Vintage French Chandelier – Or Is It?

Happy Friday! Thanks so much for stopping by….

Each week Emily and I share something Vintage, something French or something French Vintage. What’s it going to be this week? So glad you asked!

I’m gonna show you how I took this garage sale chandelier and turned it into a french beauty with a decided vintage feel.

This is what it looked like when I bought it for $40. Yes, you read that correctly. I really like the details on it and I saw lots of potential in it but I never ever intended for it to stay just like this.

Long before doing anything else, I removed the amber glass shades and that was already an improvement. It made it look much less dated and the lights were a lot brighter without the shades on.

The next step, which I planned to do for ever so long, was to paint this. I wasn’t looking forward to taking it down and trying to find a way to hang it up in my garage so that I could paint it. In fact, I was dreading this SO much that I left it as it was for way too long.

Eventually it annoyed me too much to leave this project unfinished so I got creative. I removed the bulbs and taped off the light sockets so I didn’t get any paint in them.

I used spray paint for this one. No way was I planning to paint this by hand! It wasn’t easy even with spray paint to get it in all the nooks and crannies. Several light coats did the trick and I painted over the glass part at the bottom too. I hadn’t ever liked that remaining amber glass.

Once it was all painted and so much prettier already, I hung it back up in my dining room and as you can see, I used candelabra bulbs instead of regular light bulbs which was also an improvement.

Now I could have left it like this. It is pretty cute but it doesn’t have the elegant french style that I love so much. Not really….

And so I added some crystal garlands to it and some amazing crystal drops as well. Not too much, just the right amount.

BAM! Just like that we went from dated, ordinary looking light to a light and bright french chandelier just dripping with elegance.

Yes, it really is that simple.
