I knew it was coming. I knew that as soon as I finished painting my tile around my fireplace that I wouldn’t be able to handle leaving my mantel decor as it was.
I was right!
I had already left it the same way for longer than usual as it is. I was preoccupied with other things and was thinking I’d leave it as it was until I was ready to start adding subtle fall touches to it.
But I just couldn’t .
I always start styling my mantel but removing absolutely everything and cleaning it really well. I dust everything, wash what needs to be washed and if anything needs a touch-up of paint, then I do that as well. If I’m removing hanging things then I will fill the nail holes and paint over them.
Time to start layering.
I put my draping garland on the mantel first and then started layering my frames and adding decor items.
I wanted something to layer on top of the frames and envisioned a wreath with some draping eucalyptus to sort of mirror the garland on the mantel. However when I looked for eucalyptus I couldn’t find any fresh anywhere locally so I ended up having to settle for some faux. Not what I wanted but it will have to do….
I used the corn husks to layer in first…
…and then added some eucalyptus. I just tucked the stems into the grapevine wreath and didn’t wire or glue anything in place so it’s really simple and easy to remove to re-use the grapevine wreath form over and over.
Here is the finished mantel with some late summer touches. I added dried hydrangeas and the corn husks on the wreath to give subtle nods to summer ending soon and fall beginning. Vintage books, lots of cozy candles and a few other decorative pieces finished the mantel this time around.
During the fall through late spring I can’t use any candles on this mantel because there is too much heat from the gas fireplace and it melts the candles. That means that I like to use candles in my mantel decor during the summer when I’m not using the fireplace.
See you soon!

Oh, Tara… I LOVE your mantel and how it turned out!! All the whites, the textures, the French Farmhouse look (at least what I see!)… Anyway, I featured your post at last week’s Share Your Style #314 but then I remembered the one really beautiful photograph showing everything above and on the mantel… So I reshared your post (with that photo) at this week’s SYS #315! <3
