French Vintage Friday – The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia

When I was a little girl I remember many times, usually in the winter, when the power would go out. My mom had a couple kerosene lamps she would haul out for just such occasions and we’d sit around the lamps. It was actually fun!

In fact, I remember on more than one occasion when a storm was brewing, actually hoping the power would go out. We had a wood stove as backup heat if we needed it so it really wasn’t a hardship at all.

At my grandparents house (the best place on earth to a kid – so packed full of yummy things to eat and do) they heated solely with a wood stove anyways and my grandmother also had a few kerosene lamps for power outages.

Once year on Christmas Day the power went out and we ended up having to cook Christmas dinner on the wood stove! I can’t say I’d want to do that every year but it was an experience I’ll never forget!

When I was a little older I too added a few kerosene lamps to my belongings but there rarely seemed to be power outages where I was living then so I’d occasionally light the lamps and turn off the electric lights just for fun!

Over time I have gradually misplaced or lost or sold my lamps. I’m not even sure why. I don’t remember intentionally getting rid of them but suddenly I didn’t seem to have any.

While walking through an antique store a few months ago a little crusty lamp caught my eye. I knew it was meant to be mine. All the childhood memories came flooding back and I grabbed it up without hesitation.

I can tell this particular lamp has seen some use. It’s got stains and patina that only come from withstanding the test of time and I love thinking about how many power outages it might have seen. Was there a little girl that secretly wished it would need to be used?

I’d like to think so…..

That’s awesome! I’m glad to know you have some too. Isn’t it cozy though, even if it’s inconvenient?
