A Spring Centerpiece And A Story

I wasn’t even thinking of sharing this centerpiece with you until this morning when I got a text from Emily asking if I was going to share it on the blog. You see, she had seen a glimpse of it in a photo I posted on Instagram and she really liked it. Of course I said – well if you like it that much, sure I will share it.

I mean, you have to do what your friend asks especially when that friend inspires you on a daily basis!

What Emily doesn’t know is the story behind part of this centerpiece.

Let’s start at the very beginning….

For literally several years now I have been keeping my eyes open at Thrift Shops, garage sales, Facebook Marketplace – everywhere for an armoire or entertainment cabinet that is a very specific size to fit on the only wall in my living room. Oh the joys of open concept! If you can’t already tell I am NOT a fan!

Anyways every cabinet I found that was a reasonable price, was just a little too wide. I’m literally talking like 1-2″ too wide. So close.

But then….

I found this listed on Facebook Marketplace and when I asked for the dimensions it was the exact size I needed! Finally!

You are wondering what this has to do with a spring centerpiece, right?

I’ll tell you…..it truly does have something to do with it. It’s completely responsible for that specific centerpiece.

Why?

Because when I went to pick up this armoire it turned out it was being sold by a Thrift Shop who had listed it on Facebook Marketplace and when I went to enter the store to pay for it, something caught my eye.

Perched amongst all kinds of other things in the front window was this carved wooden horse.

I inquired about it and was told the price which wasn’t actually that bad but I was already paying a little more than I wanted to for the armoire (I wasn’t about to lose it since it was the right size) so I sadly walked away from the horse hoping it found a really good home.

And then I couldn’t get it off my mind. So many times I thought maybe I should have splurged and gotten that horse.

I mentally put it all over my house and thought how well it would look here and there.

And then last Friday I was making my spring fern wreath and when I decided to hang it on my chippy old garden door I decided that the table looked a little bare.

Because you could see the table in some of the pics that I took of the wreath, I needed to change that. I grabbed some of my favorite white tulips, some blush pink roses and my big wooden trough and started to put a centerpiece together. Except it wasn’t turning out quite right because in my mind I saw a certain carved wooden horse in the middle of it all.

I tried to find something else I already owned that I could use but nothing looked quite right so at last I got in my vehicle and slowly drove across town to the little Thrift Shop. When I walked up to the front of the store I was almost scared to look in the window and NOT see it but at last I stole a glance and there she was! Yes, she.

She was amazing and she was beautiful and she was about to be mine!

I don’t know how old she is, there is nothing about her that lets me know. No markings on her or her metal stand. I wish there was so I knew for sure but maybe its best I don’t. Maybe I would be disappointed if I knew because when I don’t know I can make up a story about her.

About the little girl who owned her and how her family had no money for Christmas presents so her dad spent every night for months carving this little horse for her and it was her most prized possession for the rest of her life….the story has a lot more details in my head and goes on for a lot longer but you get the idea.

I never said I didn’t have a vivid imagination.

Honestly I don’t care if she is 50 years old or 50 days old…..I think she is perfect.

And in my mind I’m mentally moving her all over my house thinking of all the places she could go where she would look amazing!

Like on the top of my armoire…..which was responsible for all of this!

But more on that another day – you have to know I didn’t leave the armoire like it looked in that picture…..I mean…..have we met?

Until next time,

  1. What an absolutely beautiful home and story you have! You could be a children’s book writer as I wanted to hear about your imagined history behind the horse. Some movies are built all around these artifacts! Keep blogging.

That is such a sweet thing to say! You know how they say “never say never”? I didn’t enjoy language arts at all in school and the last thing I could ever imagine myself doing was writing ANYTHING! So funny you say that about writing children’s books and I really enjoy blogging. Never would have dreamed…..thanks so much for stopping by!
