Thrift Store Challenge: All That Glitters

It’s been a minute since we last did a Thrift Store Challenge. It seems like we got so busy leading up to Christmas and the end of 2020 (finally!) that we had to take a breath when January hit. At least I know that happened with me.

And then?

Spring came and with it a fresh new burst of creativity and I can’t seem to keep up with all the projects and ideas I have running through my head at breakneck speed.

I’m so glad you can join Emily and I as we pick up our Thrift Store Challenge again this month with some of our blogging friends.

In case you need a refresher of what our challenge rules are: We all get an item (s) from a Thrift Store, Flea Market, Garage Sale or something we found at the curb for trash. Basically something that is super inexpensive or free and definitely used. Then we show y’all how we styled it in our homes or what we did to it to make it our style. Sometimes we completely change the use for it. It’s always so exciting to see what everyone found.

Just the other day I grabbed a few minutes to run into a thrift store and I managed to find a couple things that caught my eye.

I usually do.

In this case one of the items turned out to be just the ticket for my fancy laundry area now that its been given a well deserved upgrade.

I heard you ask yourself what on earth I thought I was going to do with this!

I have a plan. Like always.

I started with a coat of my homemade chalk paint, leaving bits of the black showing through. I wasn’t particular about getting it into every nook and cranny.

Are you enjoying the very up close and detailed shot of my worn old vinyl floor in my back porch?

Me too!

Two full coats and a touch up here or there and I was done with the paint.

I gave it a couple coats of spray sealer in a matte finish, letting it dry between coats.

Now time for some pizazz!

I gave the top a nice thick coat of Elmer’s Glue over the top of the design area. I don’t worry about getting it into every nook and cranny since I don’t want my gold leaf absolutely everywhere.

Yes, you heard that right.

Gold leaf.

Gently lay the sheets of gold leaf over the glue and sweep over the tops with a very soft brush. Almost patting it more than rubbing it. Just to get the gold leaf onto the glue properly.

Once the glue has dried, you can again use a very soft brush to wipe away any excess gold leaf and make sure it’s just where you want it to be. You can’t really go wrong. If more comes off than you wanted simple put a bit more glue on and a bit more gold leaf.

Now you are wondering why this is for my laundry room, correct?

Well back before I did anything in my laundry nook, nobody really cared what “the essentials” looked like. I know I didn’t.

Who cares about a bright orange plastic detergent dispenser when the entire space looks like this?

But then!

Everything matters after the makeover!

Suddenly I can’t abide the ugly detergent and bleach bottles and am having to get creative with containers for those essential supplies.

What does that have to do with the wooden box?

Only everything.

Ta Da!

No more ugly boxes of Fleecy sheets on my laundry counter thanks to this glittery little darling!

You just have to get a tiny bit creative and the sky is the limit.

I agree. It is hard to hide things away because you don’t want it to be inconvenient with something you use all the time, you know? Gotta have my white and gold….
