Spring Is When You Feel Like Whistling Even With A Shoe Full Of Slush

True to form, as soon as my trees were covered in leaf buds and my perennials were just starting to poke through the ground and spring to life – we got the first snow of the year.

That’s what happens around here.

We wish and we hope for snow so that it feels like winter and Christmas and we get nothing. Then we decide we have had enough of the gray and dreary days and we decide that spring is just around the corner.

The birds and the ducks start returning.

The trees start budding.

The air smells different.

Even on cold days the wind has a different feel to it.

And then….

Snow.

Inches and inches of white, fluffy snow.

We try to make ourselves feel better by enjoying some sledding, building snowmen and snow families, making snow angels and all the other things we would have liked to have been doing in December and January.

Meanwhile, inside, something else is occurring.

It’s the same every year.

Spring has arrived. Maybe not out in my yard but inside.

You can see it in the flowers that start appearing all over my house.

And the little birds with their tiny nests full of colorful eggs.

And then on even the dreariest of days I can avert my gaze from the gray and the fog outside and I can smile when I look at the colorful blooms and the tiny baby creatures inside…..

While I try to wait patiently for my yard outside to erupt in the same things.

It’s not going to take long. It never does.

I will blink and the snow will have disappeared and the little shoots and the little buds will be stronger than ever, determined to poke through the cold ground and grow as fast as they can.

It’s time to start.

Time to bring out the special blossoms and the tiny creatures that make me see spring all around me.

Time to hang the amazing painting my dear friend made me….

Time to start planning tea parties….

…and start planning out my garden and what projects I want to work on in my yard this year.

Maybe even plan a small dinner party or two. It seems like this time of year we are ready to open our homes and our hearts to friends.

Even if that friend is just a cute little vintage bunny candy mold.

…or some vintage easter postcards.

Or maybe a little bunny….

Time to light the candles and the wax melts that make your home smell fresh and welcoming.

The morning light is coming in the windows earlier every day….

…and the birds are starting to sing their little hearts out.

I feel like singing too, don’t you?

Let’s go dig out more spring things and maybe whistle a merry tune while we spread the cheer around our homes.

I can’t wait to show you what I’ve got in mind for my home this spring!

Don’t go far….
