Finding Your Design Style As Easy As 1-2-3

Have you ever wondered what your personal design style really is?

Or, have you ever wondered if you are really staying true to a specific style rather than creating a mish-mash of any number of styles?

What about needing some direction in regards to how to stay true to the style you want in your home?

Have you tried asking a designer about any or all of this?

Let me guess – you got such a “high-brow” answer that you ended up more confused than when you started?

Sometimes as a designer it’s easier to create a certain style than it is to explain plainly how to do it to someone else.

Some of it is straight from a rule book but a lot of it is more the feeling a certain piece evokes that determines whether or not it makes the cut.

I’ve been asked many times about what style is my personal favorite, what style that I believe a certain person is, how to create a certain style etc. I can attest to how difficult it can be to explain it all in plain, easy to understand terms.

I am a very visual person, which is likely why I’m into design in the first place. Seeing pictures helps solidify something in my mind so much more than just words…..

I’ve considered blogging about this subject several times, and trying to define some of the different, most common style types. It’s on my “To Do” list but I haven’t actually started writing it yet.

Then about a week ago I was enjoying a rare cup of warm coffee and catching up on a couple of my favorite blogs and voila! I came across the blog post I had been meaning to write for quite some time.

Only it was written better than I could have written it.

And it had prettier pictures than I could have included.

And it was part of a series of posts about various different styles and how to achieve them.

And I couldn’t stop reading until I’d read them all.

And then all I could think of was how much better of a job she had done than I could do and how much I wanted to share her posts with my readers.

Of course KariAnne from Thistlewood Farms was very sweet about it when I asked if I could share them with y’all and so without further ado – please enjoy! I know you will.

I would encourage you to read each and every one of them, even if you don’t think it is your style, because KariAnne will help you determine what your true style really is! Who knows? You might be surprised by the answer….

Coastal Style

Traditional Style

Farmhouse Style

Transitional Style

Contemporary Style

Weren’t those amazing? And the photos! I am definitely planning to get her book at some point now.

Of course there are other combinations of those styles that you may be (KariAnne mentioned she is Traditional Farmhouse) and there are some other styles she did not get to touch on in her 5 posts but those are the 5 major categories.

I sure hope it helped clear things up for you and answer some long unanswered questions.

Until next time….
