Fall Decor On A Budget Blog Hop

I’m so happy to be joining a group of lovely ladies for a blog hop today. We are all sharing some fall decor ideas with you where we only spent a maximum of $25 on new items or less on items. I’m glad you are here – especially if you are joining me from Stacey’s blog over at Green Valley Gable.

Spending so little on new decor might sound difficult but honestly for me it’s not that unusual. You see, I’m always doing everything on a very tiny budget and so I have to get creative to make things work for my style and color scheme that I have found in unusual places.

One of my favorite places to look for seasonal decor are thrift storesโ€ฆ..people tell me all the time that they don’t think Thrift stores are a good spot to find decor because its not usually to their taste or the wrong colors etc but I never let that stop me. Let me show you what I mean…

I’ve always been more of a pumpkin girl for fall but last year started a bit of a new thing for me when my kids convinced me to do traditional fall colors for my porch decor and I bought a small light up Jack ‘o’ Lantern. He looked so cheerful sitting on my porch that I sort of started to come around to finding them pretty cute and precocious, so when I found some little ones at a thrift storeโ€ฆ..

โ€ฆI snapped them up. Each one was less than $4. Clearly they don’t look at all like the way I decorate though. If you have seen my home all dressed for fall in previous years you know I never use the traditional oranges and reds and yellows so how will these work?

Chalk paint, of course! Although I have spray painted pumpkins before as well, chalk paint is my favorite for them. I like the brush marks and hand painted look and I like making them a bit rough around the edges. For the metal items I will sometimes use paint but more often than not that’s when I turn to one of my favorite things – Rub ‘n’ Buff!

To some of the pumpkins I just got, after the chalk paint had dried I applied some gold leaf with a little mod podge, brushing off the excessโ€ฆ.

And this is what I ended up with!! It’s so pretty and catches the light so nicely!

This little guy got some dark wax on top of his chalk paint. Want to see him a bit closer?

He looks like he has been around a while and has been well loved and who would ever guess that just a short time ago he was bright orange!

Tucking cheeky little grins amongst regular pumpkins adds a bit of a fun element, in my opinion.

Just look at this grin!

This one not only got painted in my favorite color – blush pink – it also got a new floral arrangement that is more in keeping with my decor and style.

But what if you don’t want pumpkins or jack ‘o’ lanterns everywhere?

I frequently see little houses and buildings like this little wood silo, all geared for fall. As is, it really won’t fit in with my decor but for only a few dollars it’s well worth a bit of time.

I literally just painted the body of the building, the roof and the door and it’s a whole new piece!

Another example is this little lodgeโ€ฆโ€ฆbefore it was a little faded and lacklusterโ€ฆ.

But after its a sweet little addition to my fall village.

All of these items together were less than $25 and now fit perfectly into my home. It takes a little creativity and being willing to look past some of the minor details of an item such as color since its so easy to fix that.

Well I’m off to the Thrift store to see if I can find some more treasures to make overโ€ฆโ€ฆmeanwhile I know you are going to want to check out what Kim is sharing over at Cottage in the Mitten!
