Decorating A Hutch For Fall Without Spending A Dime

I wasn’t sure if I could do it or not.

Could I really get Aurora all decked out for fall without buying some new fall things? I’ve never had a hutch to style for fall in this house before.

It was worth a try though…..

If you’ve known me for very long you will know that my fall style has changed dramatically over the past couple years and moved from traditional fall colors to very non-traditional colors which doesn’t help since I’ve paired down a lot of my fall decor that just won’t work anymore.

I don’t like to keep things around that I’m not using so each year when I bring out my seasonal decor I sort everything into 3 categories:

  1. what I want to use as it is
  2. what I need to change in order to use but would still like to use
  3. what I just won’t use anymore regardless of whether I change it or not. Maybe I’m just plain tired of it or maybe it just isn’t my style really and truly. It could possibly be something that really can’t be changed either but those are few and far between in my little piece of the world!

It makes for a bit of a mess but it keeps me from just building up a larger and larger stash of seasonal decor every year that I simply have no place to store.

So after I did that with all my fall decor (and I’m happy to announce that I was able to weed out 1 medium sized box of fall things to donate!) I set to work.

After a couple days of arranging, re-arranging, grabbing a fresh cup of coffee and standing back and looking at everything from this angle and that angle…..snapping pictures and then looking at the pictures from every angle while I lay in bed at night not sleeping because I was thinking about Aurora and how she was coming along……

Finally I finished just this afternoon!

Finished is a term I use loosely because all it will take for me to change something about how I’ve styled Aurora is for me to find a “new” treasure while thrifting, make a new fall diy that would work perfectly on her shelves, or need something I used for a different spot! Then I will swap out this little thing or that little thing or move a stack of dishes because most of the dishes stored in Aurora are ones I use…..

I decided to leave her doors wide open for now because she is welcoming fall with open arms. It always makes me think of the wardrobe in Beauty and the Beast when I do that…..

All the pumpkins I used were purchased a previous year or made from scraps I had this year. Scrap fabric, scrap trim and lace, scrap flowers, scrap bits of polyfil from a pillow I took apart because it was too lumpy, sticks I had from a previous projects….

Candles make everything feel warm and cozy no matter what colors you use.

Copper always makes things feel cozy and homey too….

The pumpkins I made this year were inspired by my friend Kayla over at Live Oak Nest. She has a wonderful tutorial on how she makes her gorgeous fabric pumpkins.

Ironstone just makes every color scheme look better….

I love the color and texture that the decorative corn adds. Especially these dark merlot colored ones.

On top of Aurora I just layered an old vintage window with an architectural piece and paired it with a wooden trough full of neutral fall flowers and a few blonde maple leaves! My favorite this year!

And there you have it! All dressed for fall without having bought a single new fall piece to do it. I think that’s a success, don’t you?

‘m thinking you’ve probably already figured out my primary color combination for fall……

Emily’s Hutch Inspiration

Emily’s hutch and mantel never fail to inspire me regardless of the season or the occasion. She always has the best ideas and I walk away completely inspired. If I’m stuck while styling something around my home a trip to her website or Instagram page never fails to get me back on track again.

Thanks, sweet girl. The tiny velvet pumpkins are from Hobby Lobby a year or two ago and I’m sure they have them again this year. Can’t go wrong with candles, right?

  2. so beautiful, love those small bits of pink and blush mixed in!

I’m so glad. I’ve been adding more blush every year for the past couple years and it’s still really working for me so…..glad you like it. Have a wonderful day and thanks for stopping by.
