All The Trimmings – 5 Unique Christmas Tree Ornaments

I’m joining a fun group today who are sharing different ways to use clear Christmas ornaments. This is being hosted by my friend Terrie from Decorate And More With Tip.

Have you ever been wandering through the Christmas section at nearly any store and seen packages of clear plastic ornaments in various shapes and sizes and wondered – what could I do with those?

Well it’s your lucky day!

Did you enjoy seeing what Paula from Paula’s Handmade Space did with hers? What a great way to use and preserve a vintage handkerchief! I’m all over that idea as soon as I find some pretty vintage handkerchiefs.

I’m going to show you 5 different things I did with clear ornaments and then I’ll share some friends who have some great ideas too.

First of all – You can choose any size and any shape clear ornament and there is always something to put in it. The sky is the limit.

Just carefully remove the top and set it aside while you get crafty! Then replace it when you’re done.

Got any strands of Christmas lights that don’t work anymore?

Before you throw them away, remove the bulbs.

Toss them into a clear ornament, add some ribbon and voila!

I always buy or make a special ornament for each of my kids every Christmas. One year, for my Lego obsessed oldest son, I simply grabbed a selection of Lego blocks in his favorite color, put them in a clear ornament, added some jute twine and a little piece of greenery with some hot glue to the top.

He loves it.

My oldest daughter used to be majorly into peacocks and the peacock colors so one year for her special Christmas ornament I took a peacock feather, got a clear ornament and placed the feather inside. It remains a favorite to this day.

This ornament was made from old crayons.

I’m not joking.

I took some of the kids old broken bits of crayon, grated them on a cheese crater until I had small shreds of crayon in all sorts of colors. I put all the shreds into my clear ornament and grabbed my hair dryer.

While slowing turning the ornament, I blew hot air from the hair dryer onto the ornament until the crayons started to melt. I stopped when I had a look I liked. If I had melted them further the colors would start to blend and look sort of like marble. That’s super cute too! It’s up to you how you leave it.

Some jute twine from the top for the finishing touch and it’s all done.

It’s no secret around here that I love vintage things.

And books.

And especially vintage books.

I give you my vintage book page ornament!

I cut some book pages (clearly not a super valuable vintage treasure, just an old book) into strips, approximately 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch.

Then I rolled them around a pencil to get them into a tight curl. Sliding the pencil out, I kept the paper in a tight curl and put it into the ornament. Once inside they loosen a lot but stay curled.

Repeat until the ornament is as full as you like.

I added some twine and lace to the top to decorate it and that’s it! It’s a favorite of mine to this day.

Thanks for stopping by…

I hope this gave you some great ideas for super simple ornaments that you can make this year. Really the only thing holding you back is your imagination. There are almost endless things you can put inside a clear ornament.

  2. All of your ornaments are awesome! Great ideas. I love that you used a different shaped clear ornament. I’ve never seen one shaped like a Christmas bulb, but now you have me on the look out and my brain is working overtime. lol Thanks for the Inspo!

Iโ€™m so happy that my ideas gave you inspiration for your own. After all, thatโ€™s the whole reason we do this, right? Iโ€™m pretty sure I got that particular ornament at Walmart but itโ€™s been a few years so I might be wrong. I think Iโ€™ve seen some similar ones at Hobby Lobby too.

  3. What great ideas on decorating with those clear ornaments. I have to say all of the ornaments you shared are super cute and easy to create. The feather looks great in the Christmas light ornament, I think it would of been lost in any other shaped one, great job!

Yes theyโ€™re very simple and quick to make. I thought long and hard about what to put the feather in and I trimmed the feather just a smidge to make it fit how I wanted but Iโ€™m happy with how it turned out. Thanks for inviting me to join your challenge.

  4. The book page one is my favorite, but I also like the crayon one! It’s fun that we both came up with 5 ideas. : )

Itโ€™s funny because when Terrie invited me I asked her if I could share some I made a while ago. I was only thinking of the book page one and the Lego one. I had forgotten about the others until I dug out my ornaments and here I had 5 so last minute shared them all! The book page one is my personal favorite too! Thanks for stopping by.

So much wonderful inspiration with these five ornaments! I love them all but I’d have to say that the vintage book page ornament is my favorite! So creative!

  7. I love ALL of these ideas. So creative, but yet so simple. Those are my favorite kinds of DIY’s. Great job, Tara!!!

    1. stilettosandshiplap says:

I completely agree. Simple is often the best. I tend to get too complicated often. So glad you liked them – as I said in the post – the sky is the limit with what you can put inside these things.

I love all of your creative and festive ornament ideas, Tara! All of them are gorgeous but I always go for the most unusual so the light bulb ornament has my vote! It’s quite lovely with the wispy feather inside!

Thanks so much, Gail. I hear you about unusual and unique. I loved your ornament idea and will definitely be using it in the future!
